At Keystone Design & Build, we believe that the spaces we create embody who our clients really are. Once you begin dreaming of your remodel, we engage in discussions about what you are looking to achieve– whether it’s whole house remodeling or just a single room, our team has got you covered.

Each space is different for each family using it and we want your input as the end-user to best meet your needs. We begin with your vision and budget and assist you the whole way through.

As design consultants, our goal is to provide you with great design-build remodeling services and to facilitate your remodel from start to finish. We create floor plans and review them in 3-D to understand the full perspective of your space.

We then move into the selection phase where we take your vision from concept to reality and bring your individual style to life. We work closely with contractors and collaborate throughout the estimating process. Once the critical details are finalized, only then do we begin construction. Demo day starts with a complete plan!

Chelsea DeFelice

Creative Badass

Chelsea has been an interior designer essentially from the age of 4. She turned her love of design into a career by studying Commercial Design at The Art Institute of Colorado. She’s been a professional in the industry for more than 12 years and has been enjoying transforming living spaces along the I25 corridor.

Chelsea DeFelice

Making something out of nothing. Bringing a vision to fruition. Visualizing a transformation before it begins. What do these themes have in common? These are the hallmarks of a person doing what they were born to do. In the case of Chelsea DeFelice, these are the usual results of her work as a principal interior designer for Keystone Consulting. Chelsea retells the story of going to her mother at age five to report that she wanted to redesign her bedroom. “It started early with me,” she laughs. When her family’s new home was being built four years later, the process – from excavation to design – profoundly interested her. The seed was sewn for this future designer.
By the time she was ready for college, there was no doubt that Chelsea would follow her heart. She enrolled at The Art Institute of Colorado, where she studied commercial design (i.e. restaurants and hotels). Finally unleashed into the working world, Chelsea found herself in a quandary as the economy turned down and commercial work dried up. Adaptation is the key to survival, of course, so the young designer turned her attention to kitchen and bath design and enjoyed a stint in furniture and space planning for Ethan Allen. She went on to designing basements “from scratch” and privately consulting, which she still enjoys today. “From selecting paint to drawing a building, my job is to ensure the client’s project is done when it needs to be done.”

Today, DeFelice is a mom and an industry pro of 12 years, working in a field that is more accurately her calling.

Keystone Consulting has been designing spaces along the I-25 corridor for the past 16 years. Currently, the lion’s share of the remodeling we do is on the West side of town Wheat Ridge to Littleton.  The company has specialized in Kitchen and bath for the past few years but has worked on exterior patios, decks, basements, fireplaces, outdoor kitchens, saunas and much more! In the Fall of 2018 Chelsea and Katherine joined efforts with plans to help the business expand its work in kitchen, baths, and basements, having previously worked for a company that exclusively finished basement spaces, this is precisely her niche.

The company, a licensed remodeler, has thrived by building sincere relationships with its clients – becoming partners. Its team members handle all aspects of construction, electrical and plumbing and streamlines the processes of design-build with unusual efficiency.

The norm in this business is that the contractor and designers work independently of each other. Oh, the headaches that occur when their information isn’t shared on time or cooperation slips as deadlines loom!

Keystone Consulting gives the client the means to have the whole picture, all aspects of the project, in one place, and one plan. Communication between Chelsea and her colleagues is seamless; no details are overlooked. The company takes a very friendly approach to each project, recognizing the importance of its clients’ stylistic preferences.

The first meeting with a potential new client includes walking through the space and talking through the way the client wants to use it. Design options are discussed, and detailed measurements are taken. Next time, the company delivers a plan design and written proposal. Workflow and timeline are sorted out, and once the final plan design is approved, a start date is set.

This industry can be very competitive as most people will get two or three estimates for something like an outdoor living space or finishing a basement. DeFelice explains that people often work with who’s been recommended to them, so referrals matter. Keystone Consulting is all too eager to put you in touch with past and present clients.

So, what remodeling dreams have you been dreaming of for your home? Are you imagining an outdoor fireplace or full-blown kitchen? What about a Great Room in a beautifully finished basement? Adding a sauna to take the edge off the winter months? Whatever you’re dreaming about, Keystone Consulting will help you realize those dreams.

“I love being able to see a space that’s not ‘visually preferable’ and know what it’s going to look like when the transformation is complete,” says Chelsea. “My gift is to know what the client is craving. To see this vision come to life is an emotional experience and one that’s very satisfying to me.”

Katherine Gardner

Creative Badass

A life-long designer and builder, Katherine Gardner got her degree from Colorado State University in Construction Management & Interior Design. Her non-traditional career path has allowed her to become well-versed in the fixed finishes of the homes that she works on. She loves to educate her clients on each element of the process and the design outcome.

Katherine Gardner

Katherine is a Colorado Native. She grew up riding horses, skiing, and hiking all over Colorado and the Four Corners area. With family on the East Coast, she also loved visiting the ocean and playing in the sand and surf. Katherine knew at a young age that she wanted to do interior design, she would regularly re-arrange her bedroom so that she could see what the space felt like in a different configuration. When the family moved and decided to do a small remodel, she was the first one with a hammer participating in the demo!

When Katherine graduated high school, she took a week to build houses in Mexico.  She realized she enjoyed the building aspect as much as she enjoyed creating new designs for old spaces.  While attending Colorado State University she quickly discovered that Construction Management and Interior Design went hand in hand. She minored in Construction Management while majoring in Interior Design.

Katherine utilizes her diverse professional career knowledge of construction and building to educate each client on the process as well as the outcome of the homes that she works on. Her specialty is working closely with homeowners or small custom builders to remodel their spaces while helping to select flooring, cabinets, and countertops that fit each individual design and lifestyle.

Katherine believes that creating the perfect space is the best practice for a designer. This allows a client’s style to shine through and working together achieves the best outcome! “I have done remodels on a dime as well as Parade Houses and each space has its own character.” And “To be a Creative Badass one must be open to inspiration wherever it may come and be creative enough to color outside the lines!”

Frequently Asked Questions

Have a question about our process? Maybe we’ve already answered it! Check out our frequently asked questions, and if you still have something on your mind we’ll be happy to help you.

We joke that even with our formal education in interior architecture design, and 18 years of experience that design is “all the things”, meaning there is no box. Can you put leopard print with stripes? Can you add industrial and elegant?

Being a creative badass means we hold the project lead, to be the quarterbacks, the team leader, and the advocate for the project. Our sweet spot and where we shine is to team with our clients and extract and bring their vision to light. To blend things together that may not have previously been thought of…to unique and creativity create designs that echos our client’s personality and desires.

We start with an as-built, this provides us the blank slate of the space that we can manipulate. Then we offer design services that transform your kitchen, bathroom, or basement into the most functional space for you and your family. We provide the opportunity to select fixed materials either in a showroom or in your home within the guidelines you have provided for us, and we eventually provide architectural plans for your contractor (or some that we work with on the regular), and the city to approve for construction. This includes cabinet layouts, lighting layouts as well as electrical and plumbing layouts for installation.

This is variable, we provide services that you can use on an as-needed basis. Often it is helpful to put all of your dreams on paper to understand the construction costs of phased build-outs.

We also work from the beginning with a contractor to provide the design selection packet throughout projects of any size. The upfront costs are determined by the size of your project with a minimum of 5 hours of design time through multi-phased projects that can be billed over the course of several years.

Timelines also vary by project. When custom cabinetry is involved, we need to allocate order time of 6-8 weeks as well as design time, which can be 3-5 weeks depending on the time that you have to allocate to the project and selection process.
Each city has different requirements for permits, typically when moving plumbing or electrical (not just changing out fixtures) a permit is required. Depending on the scope of your project, a homeowner permit can be used to show the work completed is performed to code.

After our initial meeting, you will be provided a design objective (scope of work) which outlines the documents we will provide and the cost associated with before and during construction. Once a deposit is received, our work begins to provide you with the first “plan” and at that time we will review and make changes according to your preferences we typically repeat this process before signing off on the final plans at which time selections can be made.

Once final selections and contractor estimates are complete, you will receive the plans that are ready for permitting as needed. During your build-out, we ensure that what we decided on together, gets installed. We also are available for questions if unforeseen circumstances arise during construction. We haven’t been able to perfect the construction X-Ray machine to see what we may encounter behind or below surfaces that we will be demoing, but we’re working on it.

We have suppliers that we have great relationships with, however, if you have a preference, we are happy to entertain those sources as well! Just keep in mind that we have had our fair share of hiccups with certain suppliers and we have narrowed our supplier list accordingly – we only work with the best!
We can introduce you to a few contractors whom you may interview for your job, if you have someone that you would like to work with, we are happy to provide the necessary details to them for construction. We typically suggest a few job site visits regardless to make sure that all parties are on the same page during construction.
You are not the first of our clients to have larger ideas than their pocketbooks can handle! We suggest planning for the whole scope of what you would like to remodel and use our selection packet and design plans as needed for each phase of remodeling. Often, one area will be affected by another area that needs to be addressed first (i.e. new electrical panel, re-running plumbing to prepare for higher ceilings, or running a gas line to prepare for a new gas appliance).
